The course involves the existing FAGIN
Directors who will be the resident tutors.
The structure of the programme allows study
at Diploma and Masters level. The programme
consists of taught modules that are designed
to integrate the basic building blocks of the
craft of Forensic Medical Practice within a
conceptual framework. The course enables
students to understand how the issues in
forensic practice are referable to higher
principles of law and ethics impinging upon
civil society. It also enables them to appreciate
the complex cross-currents of contemporary
social attitudes within what is often a politically
and emotionally charged area.
Course Content

Provides advanced, systematic and critical
knowledge of Forensic Medicine and
Bioethics, including the varying perspectives
on key current issues, in a context of research
and rigorous analytical questioning.
It develops an understanding of the
relationship between ideas and concepts in
medical ethics and law, and an ability to apply
them discriminatingly to issues and dilemmas
encountered in the workplace and in practice.
It provides a formal, comprehensive, broadly
based and forensically specific training in
the assessment of evidence and research
methodologies, and in the submission of high
quality commentaries and dissertations built
on these foundations.
It is designed to inculcate a spirit of selfdirected
enquiry and life-long learning and the
capacity for reflective, independent decision
taking within the work setting.

Forensics, Criminology and Justice (CROHO 060171)

In the master Forensics, Criminology and Justice is a multidisciplinary approach to crime and criminal justice-centered and always from a different discipline look at crime and gathering evidence. What are the causes and explanations for criminal behavior? How can the reliability of a witness statement be reviewed? How are judges to their decisions, what is the significance of the forensic sciences such as forensic psychology, forensic accounting and forensic medicine for the criminal investigation and evidence? It is for lawyers in criminal want to be employed, whether as judge, lawyer, prosecutor or policy of increasing importance to knowledge and understanding of the forensic disciplines. Even for non-lawyers who want to work in a forensic professional is the Master of interest because for them a multi-disciplinary approach will contribute to a better understanding and deeper understanding of where we are doing in the criminal means.


The aim of the training

The overall objective of the master is to broaden understanding of the legal profession and the place and role of criminal justice within the society. The importance of forensic investigations in the criminal investigation and evidence is increasing, it is important that prospective lawyers familiar with the forensic disciplines. A multidisciplinary approach will contribute to a better understanding and deeper understanding of where we are doing in the criminal means. That means that blocks are included which looks at the causes of crime and blocks the way of criminal evidence in the spotlight is taken. The legal psychology focuses on the behavior of actors in the criminal and psychological aspects of the criminal truth, as the reliability of witnesses. In criminology are causes and explanations of criminal behavior studied. The forensic psychopathology is the responsibility of the central artery. Forensic accountancy plays a role in the fight against fraud and deprivation of illegally obtained advantage. Forensic medicine – for example, DNA research – is important in the criminal investigation and evidence. There is also attention to professional ethics in all disciplines and actors in the criminal, and which may also clash. Finally, relevant legal blocks which relate to evidence and defense in criminal cases, making things in a legal context to places.

Teaching

The Law of the University of Maastricht has its strong reputation due to the quality of education. Important features of the education of this faculty are problem management and internationalization.
The control problem is reflected in the teaching method used, the PBL (Problem-Based Education). This teaching uses the faculty since its establishment. That does not mean that nothing changes. Teaching is regularly reviewed and adjusted if necessary.

International orientation

The internationalization illustrated by the large number of foreign scientists that the department operates. Of course in the regular educational attention to international aspects of the law: in particular the European legislation in this context more and more important.

Multidisciplinary

The master is working with other faculties of the University of Maastricht, in particular with the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Psychology, while optimizing the use of knowledge and research in the field of Forensics in this faculties.

Stage

Another important tool in acquiring knowledge and skills, the internship. An internship is not mandatory, but many students use this opportunity for practical experience. The placement office of the faculty has an extensive file of internships, for example in the legal profession, the judiciary and business, or in the public and the police. Especially for the Master Forensics, Criminology and Justice internships will be offered in line with the curriculum and education such as the future Forensic Institute of the University of Maastricht and the Netherlands Forensic Institute, the psychiatric social services, the Pieter Baan Centrum, the penal chamber of the Arnhem Court etc.
